Canada has introduced a new immigration pathway for teachers seeking permanent residency. In February 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the addition of an Education Occupations category to the Express Entry system. This initiative aims to address labor shortages in the education sector by facilitating the immigration process for qualified educators.

Eligible Occupations:

The Education Occupations category includes the following National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes:

  • Elementary and Secondary School Teacher Assistants (NOC 43100): Assist teachers in classroom settings.
  • Instructors of Persons with Disabilities (NOC 42203): Provide instruction to individuals with disabilities.
  • Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (NOC 42202): Work with young children in educational settings.
  • Elementary School and Kindergarten Teachers (NOC 41221): Teach at the elementary and kindergarten levels.
  • Secondary School Teachers (NOC 41220): Teach at the secondary school level.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify under this category, candidates must:

  • Work Experience: Have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in one of the eligible occupations within the past three years. This experience can be gained in Canada or abroad.
  • Language Proficiency: Meet the required scores in English or French language proficiency tests.
  • Educational Credentials: Possess relevant educational qualifications, which may need to be assessed for Canadian equivalency through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Application Process:

  1. Create an Express Entry Profile: Submit a profile through the IRCC’s Express Entry system, ensuring all information is accurate and complete.
  2. Enter the Express Entry Pool: Once your profile is submitted, you will be placed in the pool of candidates and ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
  3. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): If you meet the criteria for the Education Occupations category and have a competitive CRS score, you may receive an ITA during a category-based draw.
  4. Submit a Complete Application: After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residency, including all required documents and fees.

This targeted approach reflects Canada’s commitment to addressing specific labor market needs by attracting skilled professionals in the education sector.
